The design of this particular bathroom, located in a new home in Toronto's North York neighborhood, was guided by the principle of 'the simpler, the better.' Designer Nyla Free focused on creating an uncluttered space that harmonizes with its environment. A central feature is the large windows situated behind the bathtub, which Nyla describes as 'dynamic, living artwork.' These windows influenced the material palette, leading to a selection of subtle textures and neutral tones to ensure that the exterior view remains the focal point, adapting with the changing seasons.

Nyla Free highlighted the client's desire for 'thoughtful details' in the design. An example is the vanity, which, despite its clean and minimalist aesthetic, incorporates a warm metal base, adding a touch of sophisticated contrast. The design ingeniously uses integrated LED lighting to illuminate specific features, such as the tub deck and the mirror, enhancing the overall ambiance. For surfaces, honed Appennino marble tiles were chosen for the floors, walls, and shower, providing a subtle texture. The tub deck, meanwhile, features contrasting Akoya porcelain, contributing to the bathroom's cohesive and refined look. The project, spanning six months, aimed for an unfussy, modern bathroom filled with natural light, celebrating nature, with the biggest challenge being the integration of lighting on the polished porcelain tub deck adjacent to the shower enclosure.

To summarize, the bathroom's design successfully balances modern minimalism with functional elegance. The judicious use of natural light, the integration of custom fixtures with refined details, and a cohesive material palette all contribute to an atmosphere of calm and sophistication. The overall effect is a bathroom that serves as a tranquil sanctuary, expertly crafted to enhance the daily routine while offering a connection to the natural world outside.
