Master Plan Unveiled for Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity in California

A detailed master plan has been unveiled for the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, a new museum complex in California. This innovative scheme integrates exhibition spaces within a reimagined 1960s warehouse, with galleries linked by an elevated walkway. The expansive 400-foot-long Great Hall is envisioned as a premier venue for art installations nationwide, alongside a 275-seat theater, a Japanese-inspired garden, and dedicated children's activity zones. The surrounding landscape will be meticulously crafted by Field Operations, complementing the architectural vision.

The Eames Institute acquired the 88.5-acre property in Navato, California, in 2025 to establish a public museum showcasing the renowned furniture and objects designed by Charles and Ray Eames. The site, originally home to a McGraw-Hill publishing facility built in 1965, features a distinctive sawtooth-roofed warehouse and an office building. After serving as the headquarters for Birkenstock USA until 2019, the property is now being transformed into this dynamic cultural hub. Architectural firms Herzog & de Meuron and EHDD, initially engaged last year, are joined by Field Operations for the landscape design, aiming to seamlessly blend the existing structures with their natural surroundings.

Richard Kennedy, a partner at Field Operations, emphasizes the unique synergy between the site's architecture and the Marin County landscape. The vision for the grounds is an organic extension of the museum, presenting ten distinct landscapes offering countless visitor experiences. The warehouse will house galleries, creative workshops, a theater, and a cafe, while the former office building will be converted into an event pavilion. The interior design will feature a blend of wood, ceramic, and aluminum, creating a dialogue between the original and new elements. The exterior will incorporate reconfigured parking, stormwater gardens, and bespoke outdoor furniture, all designed to transform the former industrial campus into an inviting public destination. The project is anticipated to break ground in 2028, with initial openings planned for 2030, carrying forward the Eames' spirit of curiosity and intentional design.

This ambitious project embodies the principle that great design originates from a foundation of inquisitiveness and purpose. It highlights how existing structures can be reimagined and transformed to serve new, inspiring functions, fostering engagement and appreciation for creativity. By blending historical architecture with contemporary landscape design and public programming, the museum will become a vibrant space for learning and discovery, showcasing the enduring legacy of groundbreaking design and its potential to enrich communities.
