IKEA Launches Second-Hand Furniture Marketplace in UK and Ireland
IKEA, the globally recognized Swedish home furnishing giant, has unveiled a new digital marketplace specifically designed for pre-owned furniture and products. This innovative platform, now accessible across the United Kingdom and Ireland, allows consumers to purchase items at a significant discount, often around 60% less than the cost of their brand-new counterparts. This strategic move aligns with IKEA's broader commitment to fostering sustainability and providing more economical options for its customers, especially in the current climate of rising living costs.
The newly launched marketplace offers a streamlined process for sellers to list their used IKEA items. By scanning eligible products, users can easily create listings, benefiting from the platform's features such as suggested pricing, professional product imagery, and precise measurements. Furthermore, comprehensive assembly instructions and care guidelines are provided, ensuring that both buyers and sellers have all the necessary information. Upon a successful sale, sellers have the flexibility to choose between direct monetary payment or an IKEA voucher, which includes an additional 15% credit, incentivizing continued engagement with the brand's ecosystem.
This initiative builds upon successful pilot programs conducted in Madrid and Oslo in 2024, which demonstrated the viability and demand for such a service. The core objectives behind this expansion are multifaceted: to drastically reduce landfill waste, offer more affordable home furnishing solutions during an economic squeeze, and cater to a growing consumer preference for second-hand items. Recent research conducted by IKEA in the UK revealed that a remarkable 87% of adults are now actively seeking pre-owned goods, indicating a significant shift in consumer behavior. This platform also provides a unique opportunity for buyers to acquire discontinued IKEA designs, which often hold sentimental or aesthetic value.
Greg Lucas, IKEA UK and Ireland's sustainability manager, emphasized the evolving nature of how people furnish their homes. He highlighted that a considerable portion of consumers find pre-owned furniture more appealing due to the unique stories and histories embedded within them. This marketplace, alongside IKEA's existing in-store buyback service launched in 2021, empowers individuals to responsibly cycle their furniture as their needs evolve. Both initiatives are integral components of IKEA's wider sustainability agenda, aiming to make their products more environmentally friendly and accessible to a broader audience. These efforts are complemented by other initiatives, such as the limited-edition Konstrunda collectible design collection, which focuses on offering affordable, design-led pieces.
