IKEA KALLAX Shelf Transforms into Glamorous Custom Furniture for $200

An ordinary IKEA KALLAX shelving unit underwent an astonishing transformation, evolving into a chic, bespoke credenza. This remarkable do-it-yourself project, costing only $200, showcases how accessible furniture can be reinvented to exude a high-end aesthetic. The couple behind this creative endeavor successfully imbued their home office with a touch of glamour, proving that stylish design doesn't require a hefty budget.

The vision for this impressive renovation originated with Starr Simpson and her husband, David. They initially acquired the KALLAX unit to enhance organization within their shared office space. However, its plain appearance didn't align with their desired aesthetic. Rather than purchasing new furniture, Starr opted for a sustainable approach: upcycling. Their goal was to elevate the existing bookshelf into a more refined piece, complete with discreet storage solutions.

The meticulous transformation unfolded over three non-consecutive days. The initial phase involved constructing custom doors for the unit from plywood. To add a touch of elegance and texture, they adorned these doors with half-round molding, creating a sophisticated raised panel effect. This attention to detail immediately set the stage for the unit's luxurious new identity.

Following the construction of the doors, the couple proceeded to paint both the newly crafted doors and the main body of the shelf. They selected a deep, rich gray-green hue, Sherwin-Williams’s "Pewter Green," to impart a lavish feel to the piece. Once the paint had fully dried, the doors were carefully attached using gleaming gold hinges. The final flourish involved installing oversized gold pulls, which not only served a functional purpose but also significantly contributed to the credenza’s dramatic, high-fashion appearance. Starr emphasized the importance of precise measurements and appropriately scaled hardware to ensure a professional, non-DIY finish.

To complete the custom look, new bun feet were added to the base of the shelving unit. These subtle additions provided an elevated stance, further enhancing the credenza's sophisticated profile and making it indistinguishable from a high-end, custom-made furnishing.

Through this imaginative undertaking, Starr and David not only prevented an old IKEA item from being discarded but also crafted a piece that perfectly complemented their personal style. The end result, in Starr's estimation, surpassed her expectations, looking far from a typical DIY project. She proudly noted the stark contrast in cost compared to similar credenzas on the market, which can command prices upwards of $1300, highlighting the exceptional value achieved through their resourceful makeover.
