Foster + Partners and Manica have unveiled their blueprint for the Generali Stadium, a cutting-edge football arena poised to become the new home for AC Milan and Inter Milan. This ambitious project will see the demolition of the 99-year-old San Siro stadium after the 2032 European Championship, replaced by a modern, 71,500-seat venue emphasizing both structural innovation and fan experience.

The core architectural identity of the Generali Stadium lies in its remarkable facade, characterized by an array of elongated, X-shaped concrete supports. This structural element not only provides crucial support for the stadium's bowl and its double-curved roof but also intricately frames and naturally ventilates the spacious loggia-like areas on the upper levels. Norman Foster, founder of Foster + Partners, articulated the vision behind this design, stating that the project aims to create a new sanctuary for these legendary football clubs, capturing the vibrant spirit of Milan and honoring its rich architectural and structural heritage.

The city's council approved the sale of the iconic San Siro to the two rival clubs in October 2025, paving the way for this significant development. Collaborating with US firm Manica and backed by the insurance giant Generali, which holds the naming rights, the new stadium is designed to be more than just a sports facility. It is envisioned as a "holistic and monumental piece of infrastructure" reaching approximately 60 meters in height, with its pre-cast concrete segments showcasing Milanese engineering prowess where form and function merge seamlessly.

A key aspect of the stadium's design focuses on enhancing the fan experience, particularly through its "two curvas" – the curved north and south stands. Its roof will be adorned with 27,500 square meters of photovoltaic panels, harnessing solar energy. Additionally, a low-carbon pre-cast concrete system will be employed to minimize waste and accelerate construction timelines, underscoring a commitment to environmentally conscious design.

He recalled his student days spent exploring and sketching the city's heroic public spaces, such as the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and studying the works of architectural pioneers like Pier Luigi Nervi.
