Art Deco Inspired Private Cinema Unveiled in Kensington
Nice Projects, a renowned design firm, recently unveiled their latest creation: The Screening Room, an exclusive cinema nestled within The Roof Gardens, a distinguished private members' club in Kensington, London. This luxurious 68-square-meter cinematic space, dedicated to showing cult classics and arthouse films, was meticulously crafted to reflect the surrounding Art Deco architectural style, imbuing it with a sense of timeless glamour.
The design philosophy behind The Screening Room prioritizes comfort and intimacy, differentiating it from traditional public cinemas. Creative director Sacha Leong emphasized the thoughtful selection of seating arrangements, which include plush chaise longues at the front, deep armchairs with footrests in the middle, and full daybeds at the back, all designed to offer a uniquely relaxed viewing experience. Despite its compact size, the cinema boasts 20 seats and an elegant cocktail bar with an onyx counter, set within a moody, monochromatic interior. The careful integration of custom-cast glass table lamps, leather-topped side tables for each seat, and a dedicated sweet station further enhances the sense of luxury and convenience. The material palette, featuring burnt orange fabric wall coverings, red velvet upholstery, and dark terracotta wool carpet, combined with striking silver curtains, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The design team ingeniously juxtaposed soft and hard materials, such as velvet and brushed stainless steel, ensuring a tactile and enduring aesthetic, complete with intricate details like leather-wrapped handrails and glowy alabaster wall lights, paying homage to the opulent 1920s era.
The Screening Room is more than just a cinema; it's an immersive experience that marries historical elegance with contemporary comfort. The successful blend of Art Deco influences with modern design principles creates a distinctive space where every detail contributes to an atmosphere of refined indulgence. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a compact area into a lavish retreat, bringing back the joy and excitement of cinema in a profoundly intimate setting.
