Ryue Nishizawa's "Observatory" Transforms Japanese Landfill into Public Art and Observation Deck

In a bold initiative bridging art, architecture, and environmental awareness, a massive, vibrant orange conical structure has been erected on Shikoku island, Japan. Conceived by renowned Japanese architect Ryue Nishizawa, this installation transforms a conventional industrial waste site into a unique public observation point, challenging visitors to reconsider the interplay between human activity and natural landscapes.

Insightful Installation at Japanese Industrial Site

The innovative structure, christened 'Observatory,' is a focal point of the inaugural Setouchi Art and Industry 2026 festival. Located within the extensive Oono Associates recycling complex in Toon City, Ehime Prefecture, the vivid orange cone stands 33 meters in diameter and four meters high, designed to evoke an artificial hill. Its prominent placement offers panoramic views of a vast landfill basin, an area typically inaccessible to the public. Nishizawa, co-founder of the influential Japanese studio SANAA, aimed to demystify this industrial space, making the processes of material circulation visible and engaging for visitors.

The striking orange hue of the installation was deliberately chosen to create a dramatic visual contrast with the blue-green lining of the landfill and the surrounding natural scenery. This artistic choice accentuates the exhibition's theme, 'Landscapes of Waste – A landscape shaped by nature, industry, and people,' curated by SANAA partner Kazuyo Sejima.

Beyond Nishizawa's 'Observatory,' the exhibition features additional artistic interventions, including bus stops by Shingo Masuda + Katsuhisa Otsubo and specially designed buses and workwear by Suzuko Yamada Architects. These elements integrate visitors directly into the site's operational aesthetic, fostering a deeper connection to the industrial environment.

Organized by the Japan Industrial Art Foundation, Setouchi Art and Industry 2026 seeks to establish a 'decentralized museum' across various industrial locations in Okayama and Ehime prefectures. The festival, running until October 31st, encompasses seven venues, including a salt production facility, a textile factory, a shipbuilder, and a battery manufacturer. These collaborations between artists and industries aim to unveil the technologies, materials, and human efforts behind everyday life, offering a fresh perspective on Japan's industrial heritage, particularly for younger generations.

This pioneering project not only highlights innovative architectural design but also serves as a potent reminder of our collective responsibility towards environmental stewardship and the potential for industrial sites to become platforms for public engagement and artistic expression. It underscores how creative interventions can transform mundane or often-overlooked spaces into meaningful arenas for reflection and education.
