This 70-square-meter apartment, home to DJ Louise Chen, her partner Silas Swinstead, and their son, now offers a unique living experience, blending urban charm with maritime tranquility. A Maritime Makeover in the Heart of Paris

In the vibrant 9th arrondissement of Paris, architect Cyrus Ardalan embarked on a distinctive renovation project. His inspiration struck during his initial visit to a corner apartment on the top floor, where the panoramic city views evoked the sensation of being at the helm of a vessel. This powerful image guided his vision for transforming the space for DJ Louise Chen, her brand strategist partner Silas Swinstead, and their young son.

Ardalan's design philosophy embraced a subtle yet pervasive nautical theme, meticulously applied throughout the dwelling. The central corridor, reminiscent of the architectural backbone found in many Parisian apartments, was adorned with horizontal bands of tinted plywood. This passageway features innovative circular, porthole-esque openings that can be adjusted to either illuminate or privatize the adjacent, minimalist bedrooms. Further enhancing the playful ambiance, Ardalan sculpted rounded doorframes into the plywood, a nod to the fluidity of ship design.

The apartment's flooring, a classic parquet, received a fresh coat of white paint, deliberately chosen to mimic the clean, expansive decks of a boat. Ardalan's studio also crafted a bespoke geometric cabinet from the same tinted plywood for Chen's extensive vinyl collection, featuring uniform white drawers that mirror the built-in wardrobes in the main bedroom. "We wanted Louise's records to become part of the architecture of the space," the architect stated, highlighting how the apartment reflects both her professional persona and personal life.

The kitchen is artfully defined by a robust glass paste mosaic arch, serving as both a decorative focal point and a clever concealment for old pipes. Stainless steel elements form sleek cabinetry and a rounded worktop, echoing the gentle curves present in the living room. The rest of the kitchen, along with the bathroom, is clad in intricate reddish-brown tiles, arranged in a pattern that echoes the horizontal plywood strips of the corridor, creating a visually cohesive and texturally rich environment. Ardalan noted that this limited yet rich material palette allows the apartment to feel unified, with each material contributing a distinct character.

The interior is further enhanced by a curated selection of intentionally minimal furniture and lighting, sourced both new and vintage by Chen herself. Notable pieces include tubular dining chairs by Eileen Gray, understated wall lamps by Charlotte Perriand in the main bedroom, and a distinctive blown-glass coffee table by contemporary designer Sabine Marcelis in the living space. This thoughtful curation adds layers of sophistication and personal touch to the boat-inspired Parisian haven.
