A Modern Coastal Haven: Yabu Pushelberg's Amagansett Retreat

In the picturesque hamlet of Amagansett, Long Island, renowned Canadian interior designers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg have crafted a breathtaking 2,700-square-foot beach house that embodies rugged elegance and coastal tranquility. This remarkable four-bedroom property, nestled between large dunes overlooking the Atlantic, serves as their cherished summer sanctuary, a place where golden sunsets paint the sky and the rhythm of the ocean provides a peaceful escape from their demanding international careers. Their journey to this idyllic retreat began serendipitously during a flight, captivated by a listing that promised a barefoot lifestyle and profound seclusion.

The designers acquired the property in 2006, but the existing structure failed to capture the potential of its stunning oceanfront location. The meticulous five-year process of securing permits and rebuilding allowed Yabu and Pushelberg the invaluable luxury of time to conceive and execute their vision with utmost deliberation. This extended period enabled them to deeply engage with the land, understanding its topography, vegetation, and the ever-shifting sand dunes. Every design choice, from the placement of openings to the integration of natural light and airflow, was informed by this intimate connection to the environment. The result is a home that not only harmonizes with its surroundings but actively embraces them.

Collaborating with local architect Frederick Stelle, the design manifests as a two-level structure that appears to float above the landscape. The primary living spaces are encased within a cantilevered, glass-walled volume on the upper floor, designed to maximize the expansive views. German-made sliding glass panels and wood slats offer natural ventilation, allowing sea breezes to permeate the interiors and blur the boundaries between the indoors and the vast ocean panorama. This innovative design promotes an unparalleled sense of connection to nature, making the home a truly immersive coastal experience.

The upper level of the residence is where the couple primarily resides, fostering an environment where daily life unfolds with ease and elegance. The kitchen, dining, and living areas flow seamlessly into one another, extending onto a terrace that captures the essence of beachside living. Their principal suite also occupies this floor, providing a convenient and cohesive living experience. Meanwhile, the lower level houses two guest bedrooms and a six-person bunk room, designed to accommodate frequent visitors while ensuring individual privacy. The arrangement reflects their passion for entertaining, creating distinct zones for social gatherings and personal repose.

The interior aesthetic is characterized by clean lines, modern simplicity, and an unfussy charm. Yabu and Pushelberg intentionally avoided anything overtly 'precious,' aiming instead for an atmosphere that evokes the serene isolation of a deserted sandy island. The living room, overlooking the majestic Atlantic, features a plush sectional and low-slung lounge chairs, inviting relaxation. Bedrooms are kept minimal yet comfortable, devoid of excessive ornamentation, reinforcing the casual and welcoming ethos. This deliberate design encourages guests to unwind, put their feet up, and rearrange elements as they please, embodying the true spirit of a laid-back retreat.

This beach house, open from May to October, transcends mere vacation property status; it is a haven for informal entertaining and a wellspring of inspiration. It has hosted intimate gatherings and grand 80-person lobster dinners on the beach, drawing notable guests like Hugh Jackman, Bonnie Brooks, and Tommy Smythe. As Tommy Smythe aptly noted, the home’s considered design creates an illusion of sitting directly on the beach, albeit with the added comforts of exquisite furniture, ambient music, and delicious cuisine, all meticulously curated by George. For Yabu and Pushelberg, this retreat is more than just an escape; it is a vital place for introspection and rejuvenation, offering a crucial sense of quiet and distance from their bustling urban lives in Toronto and New York, essential for recalibrating their creative energies each year.
