Iittala and Pokémon Collaborate to Reimagine Origo Tableware with Playful Pikachu Designs

Finnish design house Iittala has unveiled a unique collaboration with the Japanese media franchise Pokémon, introducing a refreshed version of its popular Origo dinnerware series. This special collection integrates charming illustrations of the iconic character Pikachu, commemorating three decades of the Pokémon phenomenon. The partnership seeks to infuse Iittala's timeless striped aesthetic with a touch of whimsy, aiming to resonate with consumers who appreciate both classic design and nostalgic pop culture.

The joint venture was conceived to mark the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, a milestone that has captivated audiences worldwide. Iittala’s creative team worked closely with the Pokémon company to reimagine the Origo collection, which was originally conceived by designer Alfredo Häberli in 1999. This range, celebrated for its vibrant striped patterns, has been a staple in Finnish homes for years. The new iteration sees these familiar stripes subtly updated with a color palette inspired by Pikachu, predominantly featuring shades of yellow, red, and brown, harmoniously blending the two distinct brand identities.

Beyond the exterior, the playful Pikachu imagery extends to the interior surfaces and bases of the pieces, adding an element of delightful discovery. Janni Vepsäläinen, Iittala’s creative director, noted that Pikachu's presence suggests a continuous 'adventure' across the collection, contributing a layer of charm and unexpected joy. She acknowledged the seemingly unusual pairing of Iittala and Pokémon, two entities from disparate spheres, yet emphasized that this very 'quiet friction' was the catalyst for the collaboration, making it intriguing and fresh.

Vepsäläinen further elaborated that a primary objective of this collaboration was to tap into the nostalgia of the 1990s, a decade significant for the emergence of both the Origo collection and Pokémon. She believes that design sensibilities from that era continue to hold relevance, producing enduring items that still bring happiness. The creative director expressed confidence in a positive reception, stating that Pikachu transcends generational divides, delighting both those who grew up with it in the '90s and their children, thereby fostering a shared emotional connection through the fusion of classic design and a universally adored brand. This collection serves as a testament to the power of unexpected partnerships in creating products that resonate deeply with diverse audiences.
