Gunia Project Showroom: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity in Kyiv

In a remarkable architectural endeavor, Ukrainian designer Anastasiia Tempynska has successfully blended contemporary aesthetics with the intricate heritage of a late 19th-century edifice in Kyiv. Her studio, Temp Project, undertook the transformation of this historical location, once housing the Panamanian Embassy, into a vibrant lifestyle retail space for the Ukrainian brand, Gunia Project. This ambitious project aimed to reimagine traditional Ukrainian crafts through a modern lens, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

The creation of this distinctive showroom was not without its challenges. The design team faced strict limitations, including the preservation of existing architectural details such as elaborate wooden doors, paneled walls, mahogany cabinetry, and decorative ceilings. Furthermore, the space suffered from a lack of natural light. Tempynska's innovative solution involved introducing minimalist, modern interventions, such as mirrors and tiled surfaces, that not only enhanced the functionality and brightness of the interior but also harmoniously coexisted with the original ornate features. The layout was carefully curated to reflect the brand's diverse offerings, dedicating specific zones to clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home goods, thus creating a seamless flow that encouraged exploration and interaction within what feels more like a gallery than a conventional store.

The Gunia Project showroom is an exemplary testament to thoughtful design, where the past and present converge to create a timeless retail environment. It features a rich color palette inspired by nature, incorporating greens, blues, soft pinks, and beige tones, which resonate with the pastoral motifs central to Gunia's identity. Tactile tiles and bespoke wooden furniture, drawing inspiration from traditional Ukrainian craftsmanship, are complemented by modern pieces from various contemporary brands. Each mirrored surface serves both a practical purpose and as an "Instagram zone," inviting customers to capture and share their experience. This innovative approach to retail design not only celebrates Ukrainian heritage but also establishes a dynamic, engaging space that is poised to remain relevant and inspiring for years to come.

This project beautifully illustrates that respecting historical integrity does not preclude modern innovation. By embracing and integrating the past with the present, designers can create spaces that are both functional and deeply meaningful, offering rich cultural narratives and forward-thinking experiences.
