Gel Lamp: A Customizable Silicone Luminaire by Billy Easter

London-based designer Billy Easter has unveiled an ingenious lighting solution: a cubic silicone table lamp that allows for dynamic color alteration. Through her studio, Public Parts, Easter's "Gel Lamp" reimagines how we interact with light, blending functionality with a playful, tactile experience. This innovative luminaire not only illuminates spaces but also serves as a captivating sculptural object, even when unlit, promising both aesthetic appeal and practical durability.

London Designer Introduces Tactile Color-Changing Lamp

In a recent development from the heart of London, designer Billy Easter, operating under her studio Public Parts, has launched the groundbreaking "Gel Lamp." This unique table lamp, now available to the public, is a hollow silicone cube, measuring approximately 11.5 centimeters per side. Its core feature is a dimmable LED light source housed within its base, accompanied by a slender slot positioned near the bottom of the lamp's structure. This slot is ingeniously designed to accommodate transparent, colored silicone gels. Users can effortlessly slide these gel slabs into place, instantly transforming the emitted light's hue, thereby allowing for a personalized ambiance.

Easter's inspiration for this novel design stems from the familiar practice of using colored gel films in photography, studio setups, and theatrical lighting. These films are traditionally placed over lenses to manipulate light color. The manufacturing process for the Gel Lamp is meticulous, involving 3D-printed molds into which liquid silicone is carefully poured and cured. Each side of the lamp undergoes a multi-day curing and casting process, followed by meticulous hand-finishing. The same rigorous procedure is applied to create the interchangeable colored slides, ensuring consistent quality and durability.

A thoughtful aspect of the Gel Lamp's design is the accessible placement of its light source. Rather than permanently embedding the electronics, the LED is housed within a recessed void. This design choice facilitates easy access for replacement or repair, significantly extending the lamp's lifespan and promoting sustainability. To date, Easter has developed a collection of 13 distinct colored silicone slabs, each embossed with the Public Parts studio name. These slides enable a spectrum of light transformations, shifting from a crisp cool white to a vibrant rainbow of tones.

Reflecting on her creation, Easter expressed her appreciation for the lamp's "ritualistic" quality. She highlighted the simple yet profound joy derived from the physical act of selecting a color and inserting the gel, which allows users to consciously shape the atmosphere of their surroundings. This manual interaction offers a deliberate and engaging alternative to conventional button-pressing or screen-based light adjustments.

Beyond its functional illumination, Easter envisions the Gel Lamp as a standalone design piece. She emphasizes its importance as a sculptural object that maintains a compelling presence even when not actively glowing. The lamp's silicone construction not only contributes to its aesthetic appeal but also endows it with remarkable durability and ease of cleaning, making it resilient against the rigors of daily domestic life. The designer foresees its application not only in residential settings but also in hospitality environments, where it can introduce warmth, intimacy, and a distinctive visual element. The Gel Lamp is produced in limited, individually numbered batches and is priced at £375, which includes the lamp and two interchangeable silicone gel slabs.

Easter's expertise lies in crafting and manufacturing hand-cast silicone items. Her portfolio, showcased by Public Parts, extends beyond the Gel Lamp to include silicone coasters and various personal accessories.

The "Gel Lamp" Offers a Fresh Perspective on Illumination and Interaction

The introduction of Billy Easter's Gel Lamp sparks a fascinating conversation about the intersection of design, technology, and user engagement. In an increasingly digital world, where many interactions are reduced to screen taps, Easter's emphasis on a tactile, manual process for changing light color feels like a refreshing回归. It elevates a simple act into a deliberate ritual, encouraging users to be more mindful of their environment and how they shape it. This approach highlights the value of physical interaction, reminding us that sensory experiences can profoundly enhance our connection with everyday objects. Moreover, the lamp's durability and modular design, allowing for easy component replacement, quietly champions sustainability—a critical consideration in contemporary product design. It serves as an inspiring example of how thoughtful design can foster both aesthetic pleasure and environmental responsibility, proving that innovative lighting can be both beautiful and built to last.
