Federico Stefanovich's Mexico City Studio: A Fusion of Historic Charm and Modern Lighting Design

In the vibrant heart of Mexico City's Centro district, a remarkable transformation has taken place, breathing new life into a historic edifice. Esteemed lighting artist Federico Stefanovich, in collaboration with the innovative interiors firm Nama Studio, has meticulously reimagined his personal studio. This project, nestled within the venerable Edificio Humboldt, a structure originally conceived as a hotel and later converted into a dynamic arts and design hub, elegantly intertwines the building's rich past with a contemporary vision.

Details of the Creative Space's Reimagination

The distinguished Edificio Humboldt, a testament to Canadian architect Thomas Sinclair Gore's vision from 1922, now houses a myriad of artistic and design endeavors. Stefanovich's studio, a beacon for his celebrated metal lighting artistry, is a prime example of thoughtful renovation. The design philosophy championed by Stefanovich and Nama Studio meticulously safeguarded the building's original characteristics, including its charming balconies and early 20th-century windows. These elements, with their intricate handles and iron latches, were lovingly preserved, serving as a poignant connection to the past.

Upon entering, guests are greeted by a welcoming seating area, flanked by display shelving, that seamlessly flows into the expansive main space. This central area is cleverly partitioned, featuring a comfortable lounge at one end and an elongated display table at the other, perfect for exhibiting various pieces. A unique challenge arose from the abundant natural light streaming through Edificio Humboldt's grand windows, which, while beautiful, could overshadow lighting displays. To circumvent this, the team ingeniously incorporated bespoke paneling, creating ideal backdrops for the luminaries. A modular panel system, featuring metal poles interspersed with wooden blocks, was custom-designed. These panels boast a distinctive muted mineral blue hue, achieved through layered tones, evoking a weathered yet profound aesthetic. This strategic use of color and texture, complemented by chocolate-toned plaster and rich brown-stained wood furnishings, harmonizes with the building's aged flooring, weaving a narrative of time and elegance.

Further along the showroom, a contrasting paneling system emerges. Crafted from translucent, yellowish fiberglass, reminiscent of delicate Japanese washi paper, these panels form part of a sliding door mechanism. This innovative design not only adds to the studio's aesthetic but also cleverly conceals the functional workshop area, equipped with practical elements such as plywood furniture and steel storage racks. Stefanovich describes the space as a reflection of his own design ethos: ornate yet understated, blending a subtle mid-century charm with handcrafted techniques and expressive, almost baroque elements. The studio's recent opening was marked by a special collaboration with Ago Projects, showcasing Stefanovich's Salina Collection, whose fiberglass components echo the materials used in the studio's design, creating a cohesive artistic statement.

This thoughtful renovation by Federico Stefanovich and Nama Studio offers more than just a workspace; it provides a vibrant sanctuary where history and contemporary design converge. The studio stands as a testament to the power of preservation and innovation, creating an inspiring environment that not only showcases lighting as an art form but also invites dialogue between eras. It underscores the profound impact that a well-designed space can have on fostering creativity and connecting with an audience, enriching Mexico City's already vibrant cultural landscape.
