Cove Restaurant: A Harmonious Blend of Natural Timbers and Californian Spirit in New York

Cove, Chef Flynn McGarry's latest culinary endeavor, situated in New York's vibrant Hudson Square, presents a fine-dining concept deeply rooted in natural aesthetics and a serene ambiance. McGarry, who personally oversaw the interior design, has meticulously curated a space that reflects the laid-back yet refined spirit of California, drawing inspiration from his childhood memories near Malibu's Paradise Cove. The restaurant's interior is a testament to the beauty of natural materials, predominantly showcasing a harmonious blend of various timbers, including Douglas fir, cherry, and ash wood, to create an atmosphere of warmth and spaciousness.

McGarry's vision for Cove was to craft an environment that prioritizes simplicity and a strong connection to wood, a theme that permeates every aspect of the design. This philosophy is evident in the selection of a refined natural material palette that envelops the two dining rooms, which gracefully encircle an open kitchen. The choice of materials not only contributes to the aesthetic appeal but also aims to foster a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, where the culinary offerings and interior design mutually reinforce the restaurant's Californian ethos.

The meticulous attention to detail extends to the furnishings and decorative elements within Cove. McGarry collaborated with Grainwood Studio, based in the Hudson Valley, to produce bespoke cherry wood cabinetry and dining tables. These custom pieces are thoughtfully paired with J42 chairs from the esteemed Danish furniture company, Hay, creating a cohesive and elegant dining setting. The flooring throughout the restaurant features cool-toned Danish Douglas fir, which contrasts beautifully with the warm cherry wood walls, establishing a visual continuity that flows from the furniture to the architectural elements.

In the kitchen menu area, the design integrates both functionality and artistry. Neutral pendant lighting, handcrafted by ceramicist Shane Gabier, hangs from high ceilings adorned with cedar wood beams, casting a gentle glow that enhances the space's natural charm. Banquette seating, upholstered in Maharam's Mexidot fabric by Alexander Girard, adds a touch of comfort and sophistication. The open kitchen concept is further elevated by teak barstools from Gangsø Møbler for Findahls Møblefabrik, which line the bar, offering diners a glimpse into the culinary process. Open shelving within the kitchen showcases an array of ceramics, personally selected by McGarry, adding a personal and artisanal touch to the space.

Adding bursts of color to the otherwise understated interior are artworks by Frederik Nystrup-Larsen. These large paintings, inspired by the restaurant's kitchen garden on Long Island, depict various plants and produce, celebrating the seasonal ingredients that form the core of Cove's menu. The integration of art serves to invigorate the space and forge a deeper connection to the restaurant's culinary philosophy. Furthermore, soft white curtains by Maharam are strategically positioned across the glazed walls, enveloping the dining area in a cocoon of tranquility and shielding it from the bustling street outside, thereby ensuring an intimate and peaceful dining experience.

Cove represents a thoughtful confluence of culinary artistry and design principles, where every element, from the choice of wood to the curated artworks, contributes to a holistic and immersive dining journey. McGarry's dedication to creating a space that is both visually appealing and deeply connected to its Californian roots is palpable, offering patrons a unique and memorable experience in the heart of New York.
