Cafe Kowloon: A Fusion of Hong Kong's Culinary Heritage and London's Modernity

Daytrip studio and 6 of 1 have collaborated to create Cafe Kowloon, a modern Cantonese restaurant in east London, blending industrial aesthetics with luxurious touches and vivid colors to offer a unique dining experience inspired by Hong Kong's vibrant food scene.

Experience Hong Kong's Culinary Spirit Reimagined in London

The Genesis of Cafe Kowloon: Bridging Two Worlds

Cafe Kowloon, nestled beneath a railway arch in London Fields, emerges as a captivating culinary destination. Conceived by Daytrip in partnership with the restaurant group 6 of 1, this establishment seeks to synthesize the essence of traditional and contemporary Hong Kong food culture. Guests embark on their journey through Wonton Charlie's, the restaurant's daytime noodle bar, setting the stage for an authentic yet modern experience.

Crafting an Intimate and Cinematic Atmosphere

Iwan Halstead, co-founder of Daytrip, emphasizes that the design eschews mere imitation. Instead, it endeavors to encapsulate the dynamic spirit of Hong Kong's cha chaan teng culture, reinterpreting it through a distinct London perspective. The primary objective was to forge a space that feels personal, evocative, and subtly theatrical, fostering an environment that is inherently social, lively, and enjoyable. This vision informed the deliberate selection of materials and the strategic layering of finishes, reflective surfaces, and captivating visual elements.

Industrial Charm Meets Elegant Finishes

The interior design adeptly responds to the site's industrial backdrop. Pale corrugated surfaces adorn the walls and ceilings of the railway arches, establishing a rugged yet refined aesthetic. A raised platform hosts a stainless steel counter, beneath which ten wooden barstools with striking red seats offer views into the bustling open kitchen. These raw industrial materials are softened and enriched by the introduction of glossy brown mosaic tiles, warm wood paneling, and vibrant green fiberglass shelving, which gracefully suspends from the arched ceiling.

Seating Solutions for Every Gathering

In the main dining area, polished red tables featuring integrated lazy Susans serve as focal points, reflecting light and adding a playful contrast to the overall design. Curved banquettes crafted from cherry timber and upholstered in rich leather gracefully embrace the tables, accommodating both intimate dinners and larger groups within the restaurant's compact footprint. Halstead highlights the pivotal role of this furniture in tempering the space's industrial edges, with the banquettes specifically designed to infuse warmth and comfort through their timber frames and aged caramel leather, creating a more tactile and inviting ambiance.

A Symphony of Light and Color

The main dining area is further animated by a large neon sign, casting a bright green glow that complements the fiberglass grating behind the bar. This space is thoughtfully equipped with a sound system, ready to transform into a vibrant hub for DJ sets on weekends. The vivid neon green light is harmoniously balanced with softer, warmer lighting, meticulously designed to cultivate an intimate and atmospheric setting as evening descends.

The Power of Palette: Jade Green and Cherry Red

Halstead explains that color acts as a crucial narrative tool in the design. The foundational palette, comprised of neutral tones, browns, and natural timbers, provides a serene and cohesive backdrop. This calming base is dramatically juxtaposed with splashes of vibrant jade green and cherry red. These bold hues manifest in the fiberglass grating shelving, threshold elements, high-gloss laminate tables, and leather upholstery, introducing moments of high visual contrast. This thoughtful interplay between subdued tones and saturated highlights was essential in achieving a space that feels both composed and energetic, especially as the ambient light softens and the neon illumination transforms the dining experience.

Cohesive Design Extends to Restroom Spaces

The deliberate use of bright red lighting and stainless steel sinks extends into the bathrooms, ensuring a continuous and immersive atmosphere that mirrors the vibrant energy of the dining area.

Risotto Studio: A Kaleidoscope of Creativity in Glasgow

Designer Gabriella Marcella has transformed an industrial unit in Glasgow into a vibrant and functional headquarters for her risograph printing business, Risotto Studio. The space features a central 'Green Room' for paper storage and printers, and highly reconfigurable elements for diverse activities. The studio's design embodies a playful, industrial aesthetic, incorporating custom-built structures, modular storage, and a mix of new and salvaged materials, creating an inspiring environment for creative work and community engagement through projects like the Riso Club.
