Aromatic Herb Garlic Knots: A Step-by-Step Guide

This recipe provides a comprehensive guide to crafting delightful basil garlic knots, emphasizing a tender and fragrant dough that incorporates fresh basil and garlic. It outlines the process from mixing the ingredients to forming the knots and baking them to a golden finish. Intended for a large gathering, this culinary creation ensures a rich burst of flavor, both from the herbs blended into the dough and the savory butter generously brushed on top.

The journey to these aromatic knots begins with preparing the dough. First, the dry ingredients, including flour, sugar, yeast, and salt, are combined in a stand mixer. Following this, an egg and neutral oil are incorporated. In a separate container, water and milk are gently warmed to a specific temperature range of 115°F to 118°F. Half of the minced garlic and chopped basil are then added to this warm liquid, which is subsequently poured into the mixer bowl. Using a bread hook, the mixture is kneaded for approximately eight minutes until a soft, somewhat sticky dough forms. After kneading, the dough is left to rise in a warm environment for 50 to 60 minutes, or until it has visibly doubled in size and gently springs back when touched.

Once the dough has risen, the next step involves shaping and baking the knots. Two sheet pans are prepared with parchment paper. The risen dough is carefully transferred onto a lightly floured surface and rolled into a large rectangular shape. Using a pizza cutter, the dough is first divided lengthwise, then cut into one-inch strips along the longer edge. Each strip is then tied into a knot, with any loose ends tucked neatly underneath, and placed on the prepared sheet pans, ensuring they are adequately spaced. These shaped knots are allowed a second, shorter rise of 20 to 30 minutes, or until they appear puffy. Meanwhile, the oven is preheated to 400°F. The remaining butter is melted, and the rest of the garlic and basil, along with a pinch of salt, are stirred in. This aromatic butter is brushed over the tops of the knots before they are baked for 12 to 16 minutes, with the pans rotated midway through to ensure even browning. The knots are ready when their tops achieve a beautiful golden hue.

Immediately after removing them from the oven, the freshly baked knots are brushed once more with the leftover garlic butter, enhancing their flavor and aroma just before serving. This final touch ensures each knot is imbued with maximum flavor, making them an irresistible treat for any occasion.
