Architect Norman Foster Unveils Debut Watch Collection with Lebond, Blending Design Principles with Horology
Distinguished British architect Norman Foster has ventured into the world of horology, presenting his first-ever watch in collaboration with the brand Lebond. Foster articulated that the creation of this timepiece echoed the fundamental principles of architectural design, a process he found remarkably similar to his primary discipline.
The mechanical watch boasts a refined profile, distinguished by a seamless integrated strap. Foster elaborated that the foundational concept for this design began with a fresh examination of the conventional expectations associated with watch aesthetics. By questioning the necessity of separate components, the design team achieved a cohesive integration of the watch's case, strap, dial, and internal mechanisms, resulting in a singular, unified object. This innovative approach to watch design aims to enhance both comfort and visual continuity, establishing a new paradigm for how wristwear can be conceived and worn.
The Lebond Norman Foster watch is characterized by its 38.5-millimeter Grade 5 titanium case, which elegantly expands to 40 millimeters at the point of connection with the integrated strap, achieving a fluid and uninterrupted form. Further enhancing its distinctive appeal, the watch incorporates elements inspired by aviation, a nod to Foster's passion for flying and extensive international travel. This influence is functionally expressed through a bidirectional rotating 12-hour bezel, enabling the wearer to effortlessly track a second time zone using the main hour hand. The watch's face is safeguarded by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective properties, and it offers water resistance up to 50 meters. Available in both a Natural Titanium Edition with a micro-sandblasted finish and a Black Edition featuring a matte black DLC coating, both versions offer customization through interchangeable straps, reinforcing the idea of the watch as a deeply personal and adaptable accessory for any occasion, from a bustling studio to a formal event.
Foster's inaugural watch design signifies a profound testament to the universality of design principles. His assertion that scale does not alter the essence of design, whether crafting a city or a timepiece, underscores a philosophy of meticulous inquiry into function, fabrication, and component harmony. The iterative process of sketching, prototyping, and refining, akin to architectural practice, illustrates a commitment to achieving an inevitable and perfected outcome. This collaboration with Lebond celebrates not only the fusion of architectural vision with horological precision but also the enduring pursuit of excellence and thoughtful innovation across diverse creative fields, encouraging us to seek integrated and meaningful solutions in all aspects of our designed world.
